Benefit Performance of the Kitchen Theatre Company's Precious Nonsense

One night only: June 24th at LeMoyne College’s Coyne Center:
The entire original cast of Ithaca’s Kitchen Theatre Company’s smash hit musical comedy Precious Nonsense reassembled for a special performance to benefit The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence. Artistic Director Rachel Lampert wrote the original script, which featured a 1930’s-style screwball comedy plot featuring hilarious songs, mistaken identity, love, and surprise twists. The show roughly parallels the plot of The Pirates of Penzance and featured songs from that and other shows by Gilbert & Sullivan. The cast included Jenna’s sister Erica Steinhagen as soprano ingénue Josephine. Also in the show: Eric Brooks, Jessica Flood, Shawn Puller, Krista Scott, Joey Steinhagen, Casey Sweeney. Proceeds benefited the Mentors for Jenna program. For more information contact the Jenna Foundation.

The performance was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported the event from the Kitchen Theatre Company, LeMoyne College's Coyne Center, The Jenna Foundation staff and board, and to our sponsor, Dermody, Burke & Brown.

Child Safety Cyber Summit

On May 4, 2005 The Jenna Foundation and Dolphin Technologies of Rome co-hosted a "Child Cyber Safety Summit" at the OnCenter in Syracuse.  Civic and business leaders from across New York State gathered to discuss, learn and develop a plan of action to educate the community and research the complex and ever-growing safety issues concerning children and the internet.

Those attending the May 4th Child Cyber Safety Summit formed small groups to develop a plan of action in the areas of community awareness, law enforcement, school systems and seeking funding for better research on the topic.

A second event is now being planned, and Jenna Foundation Executive Director Janice Grieshaber and Dolphin Technologies President Michael Miravelle will be traveling to Albany in late June to enlist the support of the state government in creating legislation to better protect our children on the internet and seek funding for related research projects.

Silent Art Auction at Cazenovia College

Many thanks to the Cazenovia College "Arts in the Community" class (pictured here), who organized a silent art auction and wine/beer sampling event on Friday, April 29 in the gallery of the college's new Art & Design building.  The event was well-attended, with guests enjoying donated artwork from more than two dozen area artists, wine and beer samples from Colony Liquor and Wine Distributors and Middle Ages Brewery, and fine live music donated by "Syracuse Irish Session."  The event raised more than $1000 for the programs of The Jenna Foundation, with much credit and many thanks going to Krista Hudson, who is both an active volunteer and a member of the Arts in the Community class (she's pictured with her class, on the far right here).

Volunteer of the Year Award

In recognition of her loyalty and service, Monique Gadoua was given the Volunteer of the Year Award at the Sweet Charity Ball. Monique has been volunteering for the Jenna Foundation longer than some of the employees. Her referral to us by the United Way Volunteer Center has been  a blessing to the Foundation through her work to organize our database and library, and her continuous efforts to fulfill her position as our historian. Monique combs the internet and the local papers for any mention of the Foundation or any of its employees, volunteers, mentors  or board members and will see her name added to the previous list of recipients on a plaque in display at the offices of the Foundation. Previous winners are Margaret Castelini, 2001; Bonnie Arnold, 2002; and Hinda Crewell, 2003.

Erica Steinhagen and Kevin Crewell gave a concert to benefit The Jenna Foundation. The performance was held in the W. They have collaborated many times over the years, including as co-producers of the 2001 White Ribbon Concert, Heart & Music – another Jenna Foundation benefit – which Kevin also choreographed. The performance included opera and musical theatre favorites. The performance raised nearly $1400. All proceeds will benefit the programs of The Jenna Foundation.

The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence moves to new office space

In space generously donated in part by Washington Street Partners, the Jenna Foundation has moved to a new location at the University Building at 120 East Washington Street in Syracuse, NY. This space, which doubles the size of our office, will be furnished through donations from Lincoln Life Insurance and the United Way among others. This new office will allow us to expand our collaboration and partnership with other agencies in Central New York and to provide even better services to victims of crime. Additional costs are being addressed in the 2004 budget, and your ongoing support is both necessary and greatly appreciated. Thank you for your generous contributions that made this possible.

2002 Jenna's Peace Festival (PeaceFest)

In spite of the heat, a great time was had by all the 3rd Annual Jenna's Peace Festival. Again, a CENTRO bus was decorated with messages of peace – watch for it in your neighborhood. Tully the Turtle and members of the Syracuse Vipers football team mixed and mingled with the crowd. Our friends from the Rape Crisis Center and Big Brothers-Big Sisters provided fun activities for young people and important information for all. Children made crafts, had their faces painted, created chalk-art, and traced their hands on free t-shirts with the message: "These hands will never be used in violence."

Fantastic music was provided all day by an eclectic mix of artists. And of course, a fantastic menu was provided by the Dinosaur Bar-b-que.

The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence would like to thank everyone who came, K-ROCK, and especially Nationwide Insurance for supporting the work of The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence with volunteers, financial contributions and spirit.

The Jenna Bowl 2002

If you missed the game (or even if you were there), you can make a tax-deductible contribution to support The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence.

Football in July? You betcha when it's the Jenna Bowl! We were at Liverpool High School's lighted stadium for the Second Annual Jenna Bowl. The Syracuse Vipers played the Watertown Red and Black (recognized by the NFL Hall of Fame as the oldest semi-pro football franchise in the U.S.) in an exciting game. The proceeds directly support the Mentoring Program of The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence.

NOTE: Saturday, July 13 was designated "Syracuse Vipers/Jenna Foundation Non-Violence Day" by Mayoral Proclamation in the city of Syracuse, NY!

Jenna's Day
By Mayoral Proclamation, June 14 was Jenna's Day in Syracuse, NY. June 14 is the birthday of Jenna Grieshaber, for whom The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence was created. Jenna's Day celebrates her life and ideals.

Teams of volnteers spent the day in the lobbies the MONY Towers, distributing our newsletters, answering questions about The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence and its programs and accepting donations in exchange for bumper stickers and buttons. Thank you to the many generous donors, who make our work possible.

Janice Grieshaber, Executive Director of The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence, was interviewed by the radio stations of Galaxy Communication (TK99, Sunny 102 and K–ROCK).

The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence also would like to thank Galaxy Communication for their support and Awful Al’s on Clinton Street in Armory Square for displaying our materials in their front window for all of June. Galaxy Communication and Awful Al’s also are accepting donations on behalf of The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence.

On the local level, Jefferson Awards recipients are ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or reward."

February, 2002

Ice the Violence teamed up The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League. February 2, 2002 was "The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence" Night at the Syracuse War Memorial in Syracuse, NY as the Crunch took on the Albany River Rats. A portion of the advanced ticket sales for the game went directly to support The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence's Mentoring Program. Additionally, the Syracuse Crunch contributed 50% of the proceeds from their "Chuck-A-Puck" fundraiser event to The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence. A viewing of the Mentoring video on the arena's big screen reminded the capacity crowed about the importance of non-violence education and anger management, and the evening's atheletes served as excellent role models in sportsmanship and responsibility.

November, 2001

Jenna's Sweet Charity Ball was a swinging good time for all. The Empire Room at the New York State Fairgrounds was filled with the music of Maria DeSantis & the Mario DeSantis Band. Guests enjoyed a scrumptious dinner and a mile of delectible desserts. Later in the evening, people took to the dance floor to jitterbug, lindy-hop and boogie the night away. Proceeds from the event will allow Mentors for Jenna to bring the message of non-violence to many area students.

August/September, 2001

The Great New York State Fair gave us a great opportunity to meet with members of the community. We met and spoke with hundreds of people, gave out literature, answered questions and sold our "Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence" logo shirts, hats and Old Turtle books. We made over $2000 and expanded our mailing list by hundreds of names. To all of you who stopped and expressed your support or made a donation or a purchase, we thank you.

Jenna's Peace Fest was the second annual tribute to Jenna's love of good music, motorcycles and children. In keeping with those themes, we managed to combine our message with a motorcycle show and judging, great music by the Becerra Brothers, Jody Gandino and Erica Steinhagen, and activities for children. Our main sponsor was Nationwide Insurance with support from Niagara Mohawk, Centro, Vengeance Motorcycles, and by Latorra, Paul and McCann and Cowley Associates. The famous Dinosaur Barbeque gave their all for us, provided their great food and donated the proceeds. Centro loaned us a bus, dubbed "Jenna's Peace Bus" to be covered by Peace Fest attendees with hand-written messages of peace on the ad panels. Vengeance ran the motorcycle end of things! We entertained and educated hundreds and had a wonderful day. Children’s activities included games, storytelling by the wonderful Geneva Hayden, face painting and more. Our table was again The T-Shirt Project, a chance for children to trace their hands on a free t-shirt with The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence logo and the message: “These hands will not be used in violence” – a great reminder for them and for all of us who read their message.

WTVH-5 Movie Marathon was a chance for us to work with our friends at WTVH-5 in Syracuse, NY to gain support for the "WTVH's 5 Million Dollar Ultimate Fishing Challenge," and to raise some money for The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence. "Captain Ron" starring Kurt Russell was shown, and callers purchased tickets to the Derby, part of the cost of which went to The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence. It was our first ever televised fundraiser, and we made some money and lots of new friends. Our thanks to Gary Wordlaw, station manager, and to all who helped.

July, 2001

The Jenna Bowl gave a whole new face to The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence. With the help of WTVH-5, Centro Bus and the Syracuse Vipers, Liverpool High School in Liverpool, NY was the site of a football game played against the Massachusetts Marlborough Shamrocks. An exciting game ensued between these championship teams. The event, with the express purpose of educating the public on the dangers of domestic violence, benefitted The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence and Vera House, a Syracuse, NY-based not-for-profit that serves women in crisis and their families.

Funded by UAW 624, the game was a successful opportunity to reach the public in a fun and exciting way. Our sponsors were so thrilled by the event's success that we were able to obtain support for next years' game. WTVH-5 received many calls expressing disappointment from viewers who were unable to view the final moments of the live broadcast due to previous network scheduling. To all of you who called ... the Vipers lost in a tight contest! But we were winners in the areas that mattered most, which was reaching people, having fun, and supporting important programs in the community. To avoid the disappointment of missing those last exciting moments and to join in the fun next year, plan on being there.

April, 2001

Jenna’s White Ribbon Concert was held at the newly restored Landmark Theater of Syracuse, NY. An amazing cast of New York City performers was led by Kevin Crewell who choreographed and produced the show along with co-producers and performers Erica & Joey Steinhagen. A beautiful presentation of music and dance, this tribute to Jenna and to her Foundation was a perfect depiction of our mission and of Jenna‘s life. Touching, entertaining and perfectly executed, this was a show of Broadway quality performances. Central New York was fortunate to have this opportunity to see some of New York City's best talent and The Jenna Foundation for Non-Violence was fortunate to be the beneficiary of it.
