On Thursday, April 17th, 2008 a coalition of Central New York agencies will once again recognize National Crime Victims' Rights Week with a 7:00 p.m. vigil ceremony, to be held at St. Paul's Cathedral at 310 Montgomery Street in Syracuse. The ceremony will honor those who have survived violent crime and bring remembrance to those we have lost to violence.

Syracuse Common Councilor Van Robinson will join us to mark the occasion with a welcome to participants and guests. A past president of the Syracuse/Onondaga County branch of NAACP, Mr. Robinson has a distinguished record of supporting neighborhood revitalization and public safety initiatives in the local metropolitan area.

Andrew T. Baxter, First Assistant United States Attorney with the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York, will present a federal proclamation in recognition of the Onondaga County observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

Susan S. Russell, M.A., of Vermont, will be our guest speaker, through a sponsorship by the National Office for Victims of Crime. Susan currently serves as a Criminal Justice/Victim Services Consultant with many years of experience in victims’ rights, services, and restorative justice.  Since 1998 she has served in this capacity with the Office for Victims of Crime.  Presently, and for the past 6 years she has worked for Central Vermont Council on Aging as the Director of Community Service.

We are also delighted to announce that the Syracuse Gay & Lesbian Chorus will be returning to participate in the event with choral selections and accompaniment. The vigil ceremony is open to all victims of violent crime, their families, supporters and the professionals who serve them.
